SSCC & Container Barcodes Explained

A license plate’s identity only travels as far as its barcode does. The SSCC is what turns “a number our warehouse system recognizes” into “a number anyone’s system recognizes” — a carrier, a trading partner, a customer’s own dock.

Why a standard number matters

Any warehouse system can invent its own internal container numbers, and plenty do. The problem shows up the moment that container leaves the building: a proprietary number means nothing to a carrier’s routing system, a 3PL’s receiving dock, or a trading partner’s own ERP. It has to be re-keyed, re-labeled, or simply ignored — which is exactly the manual re-identification step license plating exists to eliminate in the first place, reintroduced at the one point where it matters most.

A globally unique, standards-based identifier avoids that entirely. Anyone downstream who can read a barcode can identify the container — no shared database, no phone call, no re-labeling at the dock. That’s the whole value proposition of a standard: it substitutes a public, agreed-upon rule for a private arrangement that has to be negotiated and maintained between every pair of trading partners.

What the SSCC actually is

The Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) is GS1’s identifier for exactly this purpose: a single logistics unit — a pallet, a case, a tote, a shipping container — built to be globally unique the moment it’s assigned, because a company’s own GS1 Company Prefix (a block it’s licensed, not shared with anyone else) is baked into every number it issues.

Total: 18 digits. That’s the whole idea behind “SSCC-18” — it’s exactly as long as it needs to be to guarantee global uniqueness without a shared registry anyone has to look anything up in. No central authority issues individual numbers; the company that licensed the prefix can mint as many serial references as it needs, forever, without ever colliding with another company’s numbers.

What it looks like on a label

A barcode encoding the SSCC typically reads something like:

The leading (00) isn’t part of the SSCC itself — it’s a GS1 Application Identifier, a short prefix that tells a scanning system “the field that follows is an SSCC,” as opposed to a lot number, an expiry date, or anything else that might share a barcode with it. That’s the bridge to the next standard.

GS1-128 — one barcode, several facts

An SSCC by itself identifies the container. A shipping label usually needs to say more — what item, how many, which lot, when it expires. GS1-128 is the barcode symbology built to carry all of that in one scan, by chaining Application Identifiers together:

One scan, one lookup, everything a receiving dock needs to act on — instead of a barcode per fact, each needing its own scan and its own chance to be missed. This is also why GS1-128 labels can look denser than a simple retail barcode: they’re carrying a small structured record, not just one number.

A standard number is necessary, not sufficient

A conformant SSCC and a well-formed GS1-128 label guarantee the number is globally unique and machine-readable. They don’t, by themselves, guarantee a specific printer, ribbon, and label size will scan reliably on a specific carrier’s equipment — that’s a print-quality question, not a numbering-standard question, and the two shouldn’t be conflated when evaluating any product’s label output. A vendor claiming “GS1-conformant” is making a real, checkable claim about the number and its encoding; a vendor claiming “guaranteed to scan on your carrier’s dock” is making a claim about print quality, contrast, label stock, and hardware that has nothing to do with the numbering standard itself. Ask which one you’re actually being promised.

Why this matters before you evaluate any product

Once you understand what an SSCC actually is, a useful evaluation question falls out for free: does a given license-plating product assign a real, standards-conformant SSCC to every container, or does it print its own internal number and call it a “license plate”? The two look similar on a label. Only one of them means anything outside the four walls of the warehouse that printed it.
