Troubleshooting SmartFlow APS

Symptoms below are grouped by what you’re actually seeing. If your issue isn’t here, contact support@dynamicspro.ca or 416-843-6575.

The Scheduler opens but shows nothing

Check the Premium experience. SmartFlow needs Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central’s Premium experience — on Essential, Business Central itself hides Work Centers, Routings, and Production Orders, which starves the Scheduler of data. Go to Company Information → User Experience and confirm Experience is set to Premium; the Setup page shows a notification if it detects Essential.

Check your trial or subscription status. If your 7-day trial has ended and you haven’t subscribed, the Scheduler shows a locked message instead of the board, and the Gantt, drag-and-drop, snapshots, both optimizers, finite scheduling, and conflict detection all pause. Open BDP APS Setup and check Subscription StatusRefresh Subscription Status pulls the live state immediately if you’ve just subscribed and don’t want to wait for the background poll.

Check your permission set. Confirm you’ve been assigned BDP APS Full Access or BDP APS View Only — without one, standard Business Central permission errors will block the pages before you ever see the board.

Check your Default Status Filter and Timeline window. A narrow status filter or a short Timeline Days Forward/Backward window on the Setup page can legitimately show an empty board if none of your orders fall inside it.

”Optimizer Endpoint is blank” / “API Key is blank” / connection errors

These come from Test Solver Connection on the Setup page, used to diagnose an unexpected error during Optimize Sequence. If Solver Enabled is off, the test tells you so rather than attempting a connection — turn it on first if you intend to use the cloud SmartFlow Engine. In SaaS mode the endpoint and key are auto-filled; in On-Premises mode you need to fill in both yourself before testing. If the connection test itself fails with both fields populated, that’s a network or endpoint-configuration issue worth escalating to support with the exact error text from the dialog.

Dashed badges, “not enforced by this scheduling service version” chips

The finite review panel discloses, per run, which capabilities the scheduling service that actually answered your request supports — a dashed badge or a chip reading something like “not enforced by this scheduling service version” means the deployed solver behind your request doesn’t yet implement that specific capability. This is the panel being honest about what it verified rather than assuming a capability is active just because the setting exists. It isn’t a bug: if you see it, the plan you’re reviewing simply wasn’t checked against that particular constraint by this run, and you should treat that dimension as unverified rather than as either confirmed correct or confirmed wrong.

Capacity heatmap shows “no cal.” or unexpected gaps

An amber “no cal.” cell means Business Central hasn’t generated Calendar Entries that far out for that work center — capacity there is genuinely unknown, not zero, and the heatmap says so rather than guessing. Run Extend Calendars from the Scheduler’s Process actions, which runs Business Central’s own Calculate Work Center Calendar and Calculate Machine Center Calendar reports scoped to the work centers you have loaded.

A red “closed” pill with an hours sub-line means something is scheduled on a day with no open shift at all — genuinely worth investigating on the shop-calendar side, since it means real work is sitting on a day the calendar says is closed.

Sequence Optimizer returns no measurable improvement

If a work center’s changeover matrix has no meaningful cost differences configured — every relevant cell defaulting to zero — the optimizer has nothing to minimize, and it will tell you so plainly rather than presenting a no-op sequence as an improvement. Check that the constraint type is Enabled, that the items in scope actually carry attribute values, and that the matrix cells for the value combinations you expect to matter aren’t sitting at their zero default by accident. See Set Up Constraint Types, Product Attributes, and the Changeover Matrix.

The UI looks stale or out of date after an extension update

Business Central control add-ins (the technology the Gantt board runs on) can cache their JavaScript bundle in the browser. After SmartFlow APS is updated, a hard refresh of the browser tab (not just navigating away and back) usually clears it. If the footer’s version number still doesn’t match what you expect an update to have installed, that’s the clearest sign you’re looking at a cached bundle rather than a failed update — refresh before assuming anything else is wrong.

A long finite or optimization run shows only a spinner

That’s expected — a long solve shows a descriptive progress indicator rather than a live incremental readout of the solve itself. A “Recomputing schedule layout…” style message during a large board render is normal for a big schedule and not a sign of a hang.

Concepts behind this section

Most of what looks like a bug in the honesty chips described above is actually the product refusing to assert something it can’t verify — the same discipline covered in Finite Scheduling: Generate, Review, Accept.
